The History of Wulong Tea

If you’ve read the history of black tea and white tea, you’re probably very familiar with Fujian Province, China. This Southeast Coast province, historically rich in ethnic diversity, has been a watershed for tea culture innovation for over a thousand years. In light of this history, it may come as no surprise that Fujian is responsible for making and manufacturing the first Wulong tea. Wu Yi Shan in Fujian has long been recognized as a very special place, well suited for growing a specialty.

The Golden Age of tea production began with the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and ended with Song (960-1279), before the spread of the Wulong style in northern Fujian in the Wu Yi Shan region. The pressed tea cakes made in Wu Yi Shan during the last Song Dynasty are a decorative treasure of their time, made by a skill that has not yet recovered from history.
